Alibi Terms of Use
App: Alibi - Quick Privacy Button (shown on your phone as "Quick Button")
Effective date: 30 September 2026 · Version 1.0
Some terms limit our responsibility or place risks on you. South African law requires us to point them out to you clearly. They are:
- Alibi can't guarantee privacy. It switches your screen and pauses sound, but it may occasionally be slow or fail, for example if your phone closes it to save battery or another app ignores the pause. It is not a security or anti-surveillance tool and is not for emergencies (section 6).
- Use it safely and lawfully. Don't shake or flip your phone to trigger Alibi while driving or in unsafe situations, and follow your employer's rules about phone use at work (section 5).
- Refunds for purchases go through Google Play, and the unlock starts working immediately at your request (section 4).
- Our liability is limited as far as the law allows (section 9).
None of these terms take away rights you have under consumer protection law that can't be waived.
1. About these terms
These terms are an agreement between you and THE EXPONENTIAL COLLECTIVE ("we", "us"), the provider of Alibi. By installing or using Alibi you agree to them. If you don't agree, please uninstall Alibi. You must be 18 or older to use Alibi. Our Privacy Policy explains how personal information is handled.
2. What Alibi is
Alibi shows a floating button over your other apps. When you tap it (or use a trigger you've switched on), Alibi pauses or mutes sound and opens an app you chose, or a plain cover page.
- Free: the button and the swap are always free.
- Premium features: extra triggers (shake, flip, time rules), button disguises, cover pages and dimming.
- Launch period: all premium features are free during the launch period, which ends on the date shown in the app. We may extend it; we won't shorten it once announced in the app.
- Day Pass: after the launch period, you can unlock premium features for 24 hours by watching a rewarded video. Videos come from Google and may not always be available. When no video is available, we may give a free Day Pass, at most once every 7 days. Day Passes are free, have no cash value and can't be transferred.
- Lifetime unlock: a one-time purchase that unlocks premium features permanently for your Google account. There is no subscription.
- Founding members: if you installed Alibi before the launch period ended, you may be offered the lifetime unlock at a lower founding-member price, shown in the app.
3. Your licence
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Alibi on Android devices you own or control, for non-commercial purposes, under these terms and Google Play's terms. You may not copy, modify, resell or redistribute Alibi, get around its purchase or ad features, or reverse-engineer it except where the law allows this. All rights in Alibi, including its name, design and content, belong to us or our licensors.
4. Purchases, prices and refunds
- Who sells it: purchases are made through Google Play's billing system. Google processes the payment and collects applicable VAT and other taxes. Google Play's terms apply to the payment.
- Price: the full price, including VAT, is shown in Google Play before you pay. In South Africa the prices are R49 for the lifetime unlock and R19 for the founding-member unlock. We may change prices for future purchases.
- Delivery: the unlock is delivered immediately after payment is confirmed. If a payment is pending, it unlocks when the payment goes through.
- Your record: Google Play emails you a receipt, and your order history is available in Google Play at any time.
- Restoring: the unlock is tied to your Google account. After a reinstall or on a new phone signed in to the same account, it's restored automatically, or with Settings → Restore purchase.
- Refunds and cancellation: you can request a refund through Google Play under Google Play's refund policies, or contact us and we'll help. Because the unlock is supplied and starts working immediately at your request, the 7-day cooling-off period in section 44 of South Africa's Electronic Communications and Transactions Act does not apply (section 42(2) of that Act). In the EU and UK, you agree to immediate supply and acknowledge that you therefore lose the statutory right of withdrawal once the unlock is delivered. This doesn't affect your rights if the unlock doesn't work as described.
- Refunded purchases: if a purchase is refunded or reversed, the unlock is removed.
5. Using Alibi responsibly
You agree to use Alibi lawfully and safely. In particular:
- Don't trigger Alibi, especially by shaking or flipping your phone, while driving or anywhere it could be unsafe.
- Follow the rules of your employer, school or any place you're in about phone use. Alibi does not give you permission to break them.
- Don't use Alibi to commit fraud, to mislead anyone in a way that breaks the law, or to harm anyone.
- Don't use Alibi in exams, assessments or anywhere switching screens is prohibited.
6. What Alibi can and can't do
We work hard to make the swap fast and reliable, but Alibi runs on Android and depends on your phone and other apps. In particular:
- Your phone may close Alibi to save battery, so the button may disappear until you open Alibi again. The in-app help explains how to prevent this.
- Some apps may not pause when asked, or may keep playing in another way. Alibi mutes media volume as a backup, but can't control every app.
- Alibi doesn't hide, lock, encrypt or delete anything. The app you were using keeps running behind the one Alibi opens, and can be reopened from recent apps.
- The cover pages are made-up examples, not real news, finances or appointments.
- Alibi is not a security, parental-control or anti-surveillance product and must not be relied on in emergencies.
7. Changes to Alibi
We may update Alibi to fix problems, improve it, or respond to changes in Android, Google Play or the law. We may add, change or remove features. If we remove a premium feature you paid for, we'll give you something of similar value or a refund, as consumer law requires. If we ever stop offering Alibi, the version installed on your phone will keep working as long as Android and Google Play allow it.
8. Other services
Alibi uses Google Play, Google AdMob and Google Firebase. Their terms and privacy policies apply to what they do. We aren't responsible for them, or for the fallback apps you choose to open with Alibi.
9. Our liability
As far as the law allows:
- Alibi is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't promise that it will be error-free, always available, or suitable for any particular purpose beyond what's described in these terms.
- We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, such as embarrassment, loss of employment, relationships or opportunities, or loss of data, arising from Alibi being slow, failing or being used unsafely or against section 5.
- Our total liability to you for all claims about Alibi is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for Alibi in the 12 months before the claim, or R200.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, gross negligence, fraud or wilful misconduct, or your rights under the South African Consumer Protection Act, 2008 or consumer protection laws in your country.
10. Ending this agreement
You can stop using Alibi at any time by uninstalling it. We may suspend or end your licence if you seriously break these terms, for example by getting around purchases. If we end it without good reason, we'll refund any unlock you paid for.
11. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Please contact us first so we can try to solve any problem. South African consumers may also approach the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud or the National Consumer Commission. You can bring a claim in the South African courts, or in the courts of the country where you live if your local consumer law gives you that right. If you live in the EU or UK, you also keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country.
12. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We'll update this page and the effective date, and tell you in the app about significant changes before they take effect. Changes don't apply to purchases you've already made in a way that reduces what you paid for.
